I’m not 100% sure that we should be panicking about the kids not reading books and I don’t think this article is a correct take on the issue. I’m a college student, 21, and all of my friends are very active readers. My boyfriend and I spend most of our time together reading and I’ve found that a lot of my close friends have picked up reading in the last couple of years as a way to get away from the screen. Independent bookstores are doing really well right now in sales and Booksgram on Instagram and Twitter are huge. While I do understand that fewer people are reading nowadays, I would also argue that there’s quite a bit more diversity in technology compared to what there was in 1978. Those time periods aren’t the same at all, and the world that I’m growing up in has more variety in entertainment, which makes the drop in readership make a lot of sense. The rest of this article talks about the benefits of reading, which is fine, but to suggest that we’re not reading enough and that it’s somehow going to cause a massive cognitive decline is just untrue. Like I said, if you ask most of the people I talk to every day what they’ve read this year, most of them are going to be able to tell you a book. The kids are alright.
